Undos done with `u` cannot be undone

I hit `u` to do an undo. And sometimes I'll want to undo the undo, or hit the redo option in the edit menu. However, sometimes when I do an undo by hitting `u`, the option to redo is grayed out from the menu, and the changes the undo made are seemingly lost.
