Application Denied - Billing Information

Hi everyone,

I am a student trying to apply for GitHub Education. Every time I apply, I am told that I need to complete my GitHub billing information.
I am reading in Class 9 at a CBSE school in India. This is the full message:

Please complete your GitHub billing information with your full name exactly as it appears in your academic affiliation document. You do not have to add a payment method. You may need to log out and log back in to GitHub before reapplying. If you have only a single legal name, enter it in both the first and last name fields.

I have checked my billing information multiple times and it is correct - I have included my first name, last name, address, city, country, state, and 6 Digit Pin code. I have also tried logging out and logging back in, cleared cookies, used different phone, but no success. My first and last names are copied exactly from my id card, and I am not sure why GitHub believes they do not match. I do not know what to do or who to contact regarding this issue, since GitHub does not comment on individual applications/requests.

Can you please help me by providing any possible solutions? For example, does this error message indicate that something is wrong with my name specifically, or could it be anything that I put in my billing information?

GitHub Education Billing Info Fix

Why this happens

GitHub Education checks your billing profile name against your student ID name exactly.
Even small differences — extra spaces, missing middle names, different capitalization, or special characters — can cause rejection.
Sometimes, it also rejects addresses if the format isn’t what their payment system expects.

Step-by-step fix

1. Go to Billing Settings

   • Link: GitHub Billing Information
   • In the Name field:
     • Copy it exactly from your ID card.
     • If your ID has a middle name or initials, include them exactly (with or without dots).
     • If you have only one name, enter it in both the First Name and Last Name fields.

2. Check Address Format

   • Avoid extra commas or special characters.
   • Example:

     Address: House No. 123, Sector 5
     City: New Delhi
     State: Delhi
     Postal Code: 110001
     Country: India
     

   • Use official postal spellings for city/state.

3. Clear Cache & Cookies

   • Log out of GitHub, clear cookies, then log back in.

4. Reapply to GitHub Education

   • Use the same browser session where you updated billing info.
   • If it still fails, try a different network (sometimes school networks block certain requests).

5. If nothing works — Contact GitHub Support directly

   • Go to GitHub Education Support → GitHub Education → "I have a problem with my application."
   • Attach:
     • A photo/scan of your student ID
     • A screenshot of your billing info
       (Make sure the name matches exactly.)

GitHub is very strict about capitalization, spaces, and punctuation.
If your ID says Rahul Kumar Singh and your billing says Rahul Singh, it will fail.
Even “Kumar” vs “KUMAR” can cause a rejection.
