Provide a way to bypass metric naming restrictions to support migration #4136

Feature Request
OpenTelemetry SDK has restrictions on the characters that are allowed in metric name. We have lot of services that use characters like \, . and |. This poses a challenge for migrating existing service to open telemetry SDK because this requires changing the name of the metrics which result in breaking all the existing dashboards and monitors which is not acceptable for services.
Describe the solution you'd like:
Would like an ability for users to bypass the restriction on metric name so services can migrate to using open telemetry metrics.
Describe alternatives you've considered.
