This is caused by an old luajit bug that affects luarocks:

• Can't install any rocks, getting a "main function has more than 65536 constants" error luarocks/luarocks#1797

We will have to pin a newer version of luarocks in the bootstrap script.

Saw #657 got merged. Since it seems to fix only the installer script it's unclear to me - will this fix existing installations too or, if not, how to fix them? Completely reinstall rocks.nvim?

If you're encountering this in an an existing installation then you need to update the luarocks dependency.
This only occurrs if you're running luarocks < 3.12 with luajit, not with lua 5.1, 5.2, etc.

The problem is, if you're using luarocks 3.11 with luajit, then it won't be able to update itself, in which case yes, it's probably just easiest to reinstall rocks.nvim.
I'll fix the bootstrap script soon today.
