nh os switch doesn't work when i update flake.nix

pretty much the title, when i add or remove an input to my flake.nix the command nh os switch . (this is in the same directory as my flake.nix so the path shouldn't be an issue) doesn't work because it doesn't have permissions to edit flake.lock, but when i run it with sudo it exits and tells me it'll ask for sudo access when needed? Is there another command or an argument i'm missing? Thanks.

What are the permissions on your flake.* files and what user are you running as?
