Somewhat anticipating a reply, here's a draft PR to improve the situation reported in #199

If running in a jail without shm support, the following is now logged to the X server log:-

Fatal server error:
[ 14987.783] (EE) Shared memory needs to be enabled on this platform(EE)
[ 14987.783] (EE)

There's also a refactoring of common code.
