i also has that problem, i an working on that too. i guess that problem has connection with the shadow map depth texture. now i try to read the shadow depth texture, but i do not find a function to do this.

your problem mybe solute by use material.shadowSide = THREE.BackSide if your mesh material side use THREE.DoubleSide
