The content in the Getting Started goes beyond the scope of a new user getting started with VS Code. Move content that is too detailed to the User Guides section and only keep what is needed for a day 1 experience.

Should we also consider moving corresponding steps from the Get Started with VS Code walkthrough

to the Learn the Fundamentals walkthrough to keep the walkthroughs in line with the documentation?

@bhavyaus The walkthrough can remain as-is. We still plan to cover these concepts, but will have less detailed docs in the Getting Started section. For details we refer to the user guides.
