This is going to be a big jump as I’ve been waiting for the next major release to finally move forward with #443 which will require manual intervention to perform the MongoDB upgrade (and upgrade the image’s base OS).

Here is a quick rundown of things I will need to do to get the v6 beta available:

• Validate no changes to the install from the last version
• Test beta v6 images with latest Ubuntu 24.04 and MongoDB 8
• Test MongoDB migration images
• Test upgrade scenarios from v5 to v6
• Push migration images to Docker Hub
• Push beta images to Docker Hub
• Update the openj9 base image for 24.04 (the openj9 images will not be available for the beta until then)

There are a number of sub-tasks under these that I will need to do so it might not end up being a quick as previous versions as more testing is going to be required to make sure that users won't end up with bricked controllers when they don't perform the MongoDB migration.

I just added the beta 6.0.0.19 to the download URL endpoint via mbentley/docker-omada-controller-url@3bcfa22 so it's now deployed to be able to pass as a build arg so I can begin testing.

I am going to need to do the normal checks like making sure there aren't changes to how the app is deployed or any different install instructions which I'm going to do a lot more testing on plus as mentioned in the previous comment, I am going to upgrade the base OS. This means that MongoDB will also be upgraded to a newer, supported version as well which will either require a backup and restore OR a MongoDB database migration.

I do have the database migration mostly tested and ready but I just need to re-validate everything with the latest beta release notes and version which I have no idea how long that will take.

There are still some things to do in #443, mostly documentation type stuff but the pre-release/beta will allow me to sort of test out much of what is going to be needed for the GA version which is good because I imagine there will be something that I'll miss at some point because this will be the first time since like the 3.x to 4.x migration where something will be a breaking change, this time though will be significant with manual action required.

Once I am able to do some validation that the image builds and that there are no changes needed, I will try to get an image build done for the v6 version but I also need to get the db migration images built for anyone who is looking to directly upgrade instead of a clean install/backup & restore method of upgrading.

I added a short list of things I will need to do in order to release the beta version in my first post of the thread.

Just an update - I have tested the amd64 images. I need to test the arm64 images now.

I had to address a few things so far in this commit: 156f417 of the update-base-and-mongo branch to do more validation.

I will be able to test the arm64 images tonight and hopefully also have some v6 beta images and migration images up as well.

Images for beta (except for the OpenJ9 versions) should be building right now. Re-opening as there is still some work to do before I'd call this 100% done.

OK, I was able to get the OpenJ9 images updated for the beta as well. I also removed the chromium builds because it's no longer needed. This is officially ready to go for anyone who wants to test v6!
