GTK applications don't trigger maliit-keyboard

I have prepared a Debian package 'maliit-inputcontext-gtk' now and have tried to get maliit-keyboard up-and-running with GTK-3 applications (e.g. mate-terminal, pluma, remmina).

In the (MATE session's) environment, I set GTK_IM_MODULE=maliit and QT_IM_MODULE=maliit and export them to the environment. With Qt5 applications, I get the expected result. Whenever I enter a text-like field, the maliit-keyboard pops up on screen.

However, when clicking into text-like input fields in GTK applications, nothing happens.

I see that this project has been stale for 7 years. Is inputcontext-gtk really still an active project? Am I doing something wrong? Is there any alternative to providing GTK application support with maliit-keyboard?

I tested this with maliit-framework 2.2.1, maliit-keyboard 2.2.1.1 and Git HEAD of maliit-inputcontext-gtk.

Is this on X11 or Wayland? Under GNOME shell, or what environment? Given that the code still builds against latest gtk3 in debian testing, I don't think anything has changed that would require changes in maliit side. These plugins are also not required when using the Wayland input method protocols.

This has been tried on MATE desktop on X.Org.

I confirm that maliit keyboard 2.3.1 is not triggered in kubuntu 24.04 and gtk app
