Bug description

Cinnamon crashes, it says i am in fallback mode, disabled extensions and 3rd party apps, didnt work, i upgraded to Linux Mint 22.2 Zara, didnt work, my ui changed and for some reason the terminal app i was using disappeared, i cant find the shell anywhere, i have to use ctrl alt f2 to use terminal

Steps to reproduce

The bug started to happen after my system failed to mount the ssh disk, i could mount the disk and access to its files before so it felt random, now i fixed the mounting error, but cinnamon still crashes, i dont think they are related

The issue is the display driver. I have NVidia GeForce GTX 660 and same issue as OP.

Our systems need the proprietary NVidia driver 470, available from Driver Manager. While the Nvidia 470 driver is offered in Driver Manager after Mint 22 Cinnamon installation is complete, the driver does not install correctly; after installing complete, upon reboot for the driver to take effect, screen resolution is 640x480 and can not be increased, etc.

Switching back to noveau driver will restore display capabilities like higher resolution, but the crashing returns. Cinnamon, Firefox, anything that causes the my processor cores to all top 100%, that's when a crash seems to happen. So if Cinnamon alone doesn't top out the cores, then opening FIrefox and multiple complex webpages, and snapping windows -- etc. -- just a bit of graphic dispaly stress and an app crashes, sometimes Mint warns it has gone to "fallback mode," sometimes the system locks completely and hard reboot is necessary.

This behavior is confirmed on Mint 22.2 cinnamon, Mint 22.2 xfce, Mint 22.2 mate, Mint 22.1 cinnamon, as well as LMDE 7 cinnamon.

Using Mint 21.3 Cinnamon, I was able to use Driver Manager to select the NVidia 470 driver, install that correctly without issue, and the issue is resolved.

I don't have a saved crash log, I apologize. I'm just happy to have my system up and running.
