Mission: Bring great FOSS projects to Urdu speakers worldwide by translating interfaces, docs and community resources – one pull-request at a time.
- Only ~0.1% of GitHub projects ship an Urdu UI despite 70 M+ native speakers
- Localised software improves digital inclusion, especially for first-time internet users
- Community-driven localisation has worked for GNOME, KDE, LibreOffice and more
- Making Urdu a first-class digital language empowers millions of speakers worldwide
This initiative brings together bilingual Urdu-English speakers (both technical and non-technical) to:
- Identify important FOSS projects that would benefit from Urdu localization
- Collaborate on translations using simple, accessible tools and workflows
- Contribute directly to upstream projects through pull requests
- Build a supportive community of Urdu-speaking FOSS contributors
- Join us: Star and fork this repository to show your interest
- Suggest projects: Open an issue with the "project-suggestion" label to recommend FOSS projects for localization
- Start translating: Check our "beginner-friendly-translation" issues to find simple translation tasks that are perfect for newcomers (these are small sets of strings that need translation from English to Urdu)
- All contributors will be recognized in our official contributors list
- Both technical and non-technical contributions are valued and welcomed
- Follow our Code of Conduct
- Use Urdu-Pakistan locale (ur_PK) unless a project explicitly requires ur_IN
- Prefer Perso-Arabic script, avoid Roman Urdu
- Maintain consistent terminology across projects (see our growing glossary)
- Test your translations in context whenever possible
