Switching languages shows "page not found"

English uses different version tags in the URL, thus a page in english in .../4.4/... would be located in .../4.x/... in Spanish or German. Same with the tags latest and stable, they only exist in English. This makes switching languages a bit hard and confusing, because an error 404 page is shown instead of redirecting to the correct URL or the home page.

This has been bugging me for some time since Google sometimes returns the Spanish pages but I want to read the English version.
