log was removed at 5ba052e but used again at 27f6032
This PR is a duplicate of #57. When I created that PR, I did not realize that subsequent changes to my master branch would be appended to a pending PR in an upstream repo. I made subsequent changes, and they were appended. This PR fixes that by isolating the original fix onto a new branch.
