Using a margin-left and overflow: hidden we can only show the star counts :)

github-count

This gives social signal while not being so ugly.

Pretty cool. I'll let @petehunt /Tom/@zpao merge it - it has to be pushed to the main site anyways once merged. Really wishing that clicking it actually starred it.

Why are we doing this? I personally find it a little bit distracting...

This gives a signal that this is an interesting project that should be looked at.

We are already doing this:

  • Say that it is made by a well known entity: Facebook, Instagram

But we can also do the following:

  • Show the numbers of stars, forks, likes, +1 ...
  • Display testimonials by users: Khan Academy, Propeller ... are using it, Dion Almaer tweeted it ...

imo the white on black there has too much contrast. Also, can we display Facebook/Instagram more prominently? Right now it's in a corner at the bottom.

Edit: forgot Facebook's in the url

This is better than the two widgets next to the red buttons in the middle, but I agree there's still too much contrast. We can easily query the GitHub API ourselves rather than using ghbtns to do it and do something custom.

I'm not sure it makes sense to display FB and IG more prominently given that facebook is already in the URL. I'm not totally opposed but it might discourage contributors who want to think of it as a community project.

Happy to write a short sentence or two on behalf of KA if we want to go that route.

I think if you've made it to this page, the number of stars on github is not a strong signal you should start using it. I honestly see it as noise. If we think we need more signal, testimonials could help as well as just explaining in the best way possible on the home page.

Yeah, this is not the best thing.
