UI redesign approach

I just took a look at the pixls.us Darktable UI redesign thread: https://discuss.pixls.us/t/i-am-working-on-a-rebrand-for-darktable/44382/84

What is the agreed on approach for actually starting to implement these changes to Darktable? It'll definitely take more than CSS changes. I'd like to work on this at some point, but submitting PRs with changes to certain sections of the UI one at a time would end up with a pretty inconsistent looking UI until all work is finished.

Thanks for opening this. Indeed, the thread on the UI redesign linked above is really nice. I do like most of the ideas presented in there.

Though, my feeling is that this needs to be done after Gtk4 migration as many changes will require some Gtk changes.

If some of the idea here can be already implemented just in CSS why not. And thanks for stepped in, we need a leader to drive this long and difficult project. I would say that we need also to have rudantu on board.

I would think that the first step we could do is to capture in this issue all the good idea from the pixls thread.

I'll see if I can reach rudantu and get him involved. He's done an incredible amount of work on this so far.

Regarding the GTK4 migration. How do you feel about starting to implement these changes before the migration, but following the guidelines set out in the Migrating from GTK 3.x to GTK 4 webpage.

GTK4 has been out for a while now, and it would be nice to get the ball rolling on this, while also preparing any parts of the GTK code changed for migration to GTK4.

@aliqut : The Gtk4 migration is already worked on by @dterrahe @zisoft. But this will be a long and difficult road. My comment was that if on your side you start changing Gtk stuff needed for the redesign there is a huge chance that it will clash with the Gtk4 migration.

That being said you can start doing some changes if you feel it is important but beware that the Gtk4 is the priority at the moment and we need to stabilize somehow the UI code for this project, so you'll need to rebase and fix conflicts. That's up to you.

Do not hesitate to discuss all issues I'll do my best to coordinate the work between the UI redesign and the Gtk4 migration.

Did you consider a test using Slint? I see a good point to using Slint in this project from GTK: https://github.com/qarmin/czkawka
