Can't build on rhel4 with gcc346 or 4.1

Long story as to why I need to build there, but getting this. Any idea?

Got past that by adding braces for the if/else, however now have lots of issues around pthread_rwlock_t

Fixed it by adding -D_GNU_SOURCE. Unfortunately hitting gz_header problems now...

And also TAILQ_EMPTY and TAILQ_HEAD_INITIALIZER don't exist in sys/queue.h. Can I just copy those inline?

Are we moving backwards in time?

I'm doing some tests with OpenSUSE's open build service which has support for building on various platforms, I'll try to get this sorted there for RHEL-4.

I was able to get it to work with some hacks. (copying the TAILQ_EMPTY and TAILQ_HEAD_INITIALIZER #defines from a newer RHEL into my own file, and building a newer zlib version than the one on RHEL4, etc.).

To be honest, my more pressing needs have to do with the timeouts and crashes that I'm still seeing
at shutdown that I've mentioned in the other github issues.

The sync stuff I was able to fix by using FCC 4.1 instead of 346. The TAIL
stuff I had to copy the macros from a newer host and pit them in a file
that rd.h includes

librdkafka requires 64-bit atomics, be it from __sync, __atomic or libatomic.
The new configure script in the c++_configure branch solves this problem, or at least identifies it on nonsupported platforms.
