You are most likely missing a dependency. If you do an ldd on steamclient.so it might show something.

libtier0_s and libvstdlib_s are Steam binaries and are next to steamclient.so (LD_LIBRARY_PATH is set to reference them), so they aren't the problem. Other common causes of this are a bad OpenGL installation, or messing with the Steam runtime setting.

I don't believe this is caused by misconfigured system. I had installed Steam from a repo, and I believe it was the 32 bit version. It has started properly until I did the update, which brought the 64 bit version and the problem at hand.

InternalAPI_Init_Internal loads steamclient.so and calls a relatively simple init routine in it. It's much more likely that steamclient.so failed to load than the init routine failed.

I have the same problem with the non installed steam binaries libtier0_s and libvstdlib_s as also.

When steam opens the X system restarted every time.

libtier0_s and libvstdlib_s are installed with steam and are in the same directory as steamclient.so, you just need to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to refer to that directly when you do your ldd (that's done automatically by steam.sh when running so you don't need to set it any other time).
