merge Windows XP support PRs #6176 and #6177 into a single contribution

I'm requesting that the Windows XP support changes from both PR #6176 (by @Sugar-Baby) and PR #6177 (by @AtomAlpaca) be consolidated into a single pull request while:

Preserving all original code changes from both contributions

Maintaining proper attribution to both authors

Resolving any technical conflicts between the implementations

Keeping the documentation improvements from both PRs

Rationale for merging:

Avoids duplicate efforts for Windows XP support

Combines the best aspects of both implementations

Maintains credit for both contributors

Results in cleaner project history

Suggested approach:

Create a new PR that combines both changesets

Document both authors in the commit message (Co-authored-by)
