[USE CASE] Set default Relationship Type (only) for field

Overview of Use Case
Allow the "Set default value" checkbox to have an effect on the Contributors (field_linked_agent) field with only one of the two values set for the field. I would like to set a default Relationship Type of "Creator" for all new instances of this field without setting an entity reference, but when I go through the expected Drupal UI steps it does not stick.

Story:
As a site building I want to configure the Contributors field to have a default Relationship Type of Creator without setting a default entity reference so that content creators do not have to select Creator from the list when it will be used in the vast majority of cases.

Currently one must set both the Relationship Type value and the entity reference value in order for a default value for the field to stick. This is worse than not being able to set only a Relationship Type for my use case, since it would lead to confusion about the appropriate entity reference.
