Curious why can't I install vizdoom with conda deps?

looking at guide conda install guide

Note that pip install vizdoom won't work with conda install and you have to follow these steps.

I would like to understand this. It would make more sense to me if had to install like git+https://github.com/mwydmuch/ViZDoom.git in pip section but that doesn't work unless I install system deps.

creating a conda package for it would solve this problem

is that the only way? is it possible to get access to the conda deps during the pip install step?

also when installing from pypi does it compile?

Oh you probably only need to run pip install -e . after cloning.

So if you do the following:

1. Create your conda environment (let's call it doom) - recommended python 3.11
2. Activate your conda environment conda activate doom
3. Now, you have a couple choices (A=dev, B=user)
   A. Clone this repository, then cd into cd ViZDoom and run pip install -e . (warning: this is if you want to make underlying changes to the code)
   B. Or if you're more of a user and don't plan to make changes to the repository, instead you can run pip install gymnasium and simply use the ViZDoom environment like so:

from vizdoom import gymnasium_wrapper
env = gymnasium.make("VizdoomDeadlyCorridor-v0")
observation, info = env.reset()
for _ in range(1000):
   action = policy(observation)  # this is where you would insert your policy
   observation, reward, terminated, truncated, info = env.step(action)

   if terminated or truncated:
      observation, info = env.reset()

env.close()

Conda More Broadly

For conda dependencies, I don't think you typically point to git repos (although that would be nice), instead you usually create a conda environment, seed it with a python version (ideally 3.11+) and then you activate the environnment and run pip install {...} to set everything up.
