copyparty won't keep running after sfx

I'm at a stalemate. I've completely reinstalled python (from the official website, NOT WINGET, as suggested), but I can only reach this.

Double clicking the file (in my case: Open with -> Python) will lead to the same result.

"Installing" copyparty via PyPI will work and will keep running as expected, but I would like using the .py file itself.

I feel like I'm missing something very stupid here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

huh, that's extremely funky...

just a couple ideas to try to narrow it down a bit --

• try running py .\copyparty-sfx.py -j1

  • this will trick it into another mode of operation which might have another outcome; even if this makes it start, it is not a good solution

• if you're familiar with the windows event viewer, there might be some interesting entries there, maybe python crashed and left a trace there? should probably be in Windows Logs > Application near the top if you make it happen and then immediately view that "folder" in eventviewer

• are you running any antivirus? ran any sort of windows optimizations / debloaters? could you check winver ?

• and just in case, could you perhaps create and upload a 7z of the contents of C:\Users\Constrat\AppData\Local\Temp\pe-copyparty

• also curious if you are able to run the zipapp; this is also not a good solution since it has certain drawbacks compared to the sfx.py

3. • No antivirus except Windows Defender (which shows nothing in the Protection History)
   • Yes, I'm running Win 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC, which by default comes with less bloat, then I ran on top of it ChrisTitus WinUtil. The "optimizations" never really gave me any issues on any program.

yeah, they're almost the same thing, just different upgrade procedure -- you can upgrade the pypi by running the install command again, and you start copyparty with py -m copyparty instead of py copyparty-sfx.py

but I still really wanna figure this out if you've time to help debugging a bit more :>

I wasn't able to reproduce the issue, tried the same LTSC version and sent it through WinUtil but was still fine -- could you try this and upload bootlog.txt? that'll show us how far it gets at least, and maybe that'll be an a-ha moment:

py -X importtime .\copyparty-sfx.py 2>bootlog.txt >&2

EDIT: the retcode you got was 0xc0000409 which is STATUS_STACK_BUFFER_OVERRUN, possibly memory corruption -- likely due to a programming error in python, although it could also be your RAM (very unlikely)

Sorry, went to bed... I completely forgot to add this, but the same issue happens on my windows 10 enterprise laptop.

Since the main use I would have for copyparty is on the laptop as a file server I've used pypi there and it's almost done indexing 3 disks (it's now indexing the media: anime/music/TV etc disk)

I am also encountering the same issue.

Upon tracing, the problem appears to occur on the line return ctypes.CDLL(lib) within the load_lib function in magic\loader.py.

Specifically, when the value of lib is C:\\Program Files\\Git\\usr\\bin\\msys-magic-1.dll, an error is raised indicating a Windows fatal exception: access violation.
