Emacs keymap for Zed

[ozanmakes]

macOS has support for common Emacs movement keybindings out of the box. I started configuring Zed with other common keybindings for my muscle memory.

This is just to get the ball rolling and by no means comprehensive. If you have your own additions please share! I would really like tips on how to get marking (ctrl+space) and pasting (yanking) working like it does in Emacs.

As a workaround, I add shift to every movement bindings to mark things.

I think this is a more comprehensive keymap than mine, but i've been working on a branch that will allow emacs as a default option, and have a basic set of emacs bindings.

@nathansobo would that be of interest? I don't know how to get permission to push a new branch to put a pull request against. Then we can all work together in the future to improve the keymap but it will at least be in there.

I have switch my entire dev environment from emacs to zed. And I have updated my keymap as following with the help of zed assistant AI: my-zed-emacs-keymap.json

I spent many hours trying to set up my own Emacs keybindings that are closer to real Emacs keybindings. However, I ended up temporarily switching to Vim keybinding mode until Zed provides a better Emacs keybinding experience. 😿

"ctrl-p": "editor::MoveUp" is not properly working when cursor hits the first line of code.

Also there are some overlap between Emacs keybinding and Zed(VS code), such as "ctrl-b": "editor::MoveLeft", -> This one in Zed default is open/close left side panel. So if you use Emacs keybinding you are loosing it or you need to remap it.

Once, they do support mark functionality like vim, how do we map to "emacs rectangle mode"? Mapping it to Vim's (block)visual mode?

Internally, Zed is using neovim rust crate for its vim mode:

This allows Vim mode to have more precise internal communication.

While Emacs keybindings could handle some functionality, they would only be mappings. Therefore, there will be some limitations without Zed's internal side help.

Funny thing is, even Vim mode doesn’t 100% match the real Vim bindings (for example, Ctrl+n).
SO I am trying to use VIM mode but Emacs keybinding in Vim's insert mode.

Add emacs keybindings for mark emulation #22904 implements %95 of Emacs set-mark + movement commands without an explicit "mark-mode". I've been using these for a few days and it is working great in practice.

The "selection" context that enables this is already merged (#21927), so you can test this and provide feedback by copying these keybindings to your keymap.json.

In Emacs, C-n moves to the next line.
However, in Zed with Emacs keybindings, pressing C-n at the bottom of the file switches to 'creating a new tab.'

Several commands use Prev (e.g. SelectPrevMatch), but in the current version of Zed, this causes errors.

You should replace all instances of Prev with Previous, like so:

"search::SelectPrevMatch" → "search::SelectPreviousMatch"

This applies to multiple places throughout the keymap.
Zed seems to require full command names—abbreviations like Prev aren't recognized.

Has anyone found a way to cancel the mark after a Cut or Copy operation? I have the following:

      "ctrl-w": "editor::Cut",
      "cmd-w": "editor::Copy",
      "ctrl-y": "editor::Paste",

After a Cut or Copy I would like to disable the mark, which I can do with a follow up Ctrl-g (editor::Cancel).

For example, if I could bind these to two actions it would model what I'm trying to do:

In Emacs, you can hit ^k multiple times to cut multiple lines into the paste buffer (I think the exact behavior is that ^k appends to the yank buffer if the cursor hasn't moved since the last time ^k was hit.) It's very common to hit it a few times to cut multiple lines that you want to cut and paste elsewhere. These sort of sequences are built-in to Emacs user's muscle memory. Could we have a version of the CutToEndOfLine command that does this?
