Do we want a new name for warm-metal CSI driver?

A suggestion I want to add

• iaav-csi-driver/image-volume-csi-driver - IaaV - Image as a Volume. From the main readme - Users can mount images as either pre-provisioned PVs or ephemeral volumes. . Since this driver always creates a volume out of a image, that should reflect in the naming.

My thoughts on the names mentioned in the first comment, which I either think works or don't work. I didn't comment on the names that I just didn't like(for no logical reason at all) just as a personal preferance.

• 👍🏼 image-mounter-csi-driver - To me this sounds the best, among the list, as it answers the question what does the driver do?.
• 👎🏼 oci-csi-driver/oci-image-csi-driver - This plugin is just a CSI driver. It shouldn't be concerned about the resources' specifications, if any. For example, the fact that the plugin exposes a gRPC server shouldn't be exposed by including grpc in the name - oci-csi-grpc-driver.
• 👎🏼 mountable-image-csi-driver - mountable-image sounds to me like a quality of the image. Appending the csi-driver causes me to question whether the CSI driver is making the image be mountable. I'd like to argue that since the driver doesn't actually modify an image in any way, this name sounds misleading.

I think there may be some confusion here as OCI and "image" are synonymous. OCI stands for "open container image" which is what this project is designed to mount as a volume. A Docker image is an OCI image, the same way a podman container is an image as is any container that exists and runs in Kubernetes.

I also fear "image" may be far too generic. Are we referring to an ISO image? Maybe a JPEG or PNG? Or maybe a database backup image?

Image could mean any infinite number of things and "mounting images" is far from exclusive to the somewhat unusual use-case here that uses Open Container Images.

Maybe container-image-csi-driver would be more clear.

OCI stands for "open container image"

OCI stands for Open Container Initiative and the spec for an image is called Image Format Specification. Any runtime, whether it be Docker, Rocket or Podman, if they want to have interoperability needs to conform to the Runtime Specification. I even agree that OCI and "image" are synonymous to some degree, in some contexts but they are not synonyms.

I also fear "image" may be far too generic. Are we referring to an ISO image? Maybe a JPEG or PNG? Or maybe a database backup image?

Agree with this point, and container-image might be more descriptive.

I like the term Image as a Volume (iaav) but I don't think it is well known. image-volume-csi-driver sounds like a good name to me.

I agree that these are not well-known names. But even warm-metal/docker at some point were not well known names. I suggested those names because I felt that those are descriptive as well as catchy. If this project becomes popular, you'll find it in Google Search 😉 @vadasambar

I have unpinned the discussion, I don't see an option to archive this discussion. We could lock it, but I personally would not like to enforce it ATM, considering the fact that we don't have many contributors and it would be nice to see more comments.
