Loading data using "alternate data format"

Hi - First, does the "alternate data format" work? I'm trying to load a tree with ajax using that format, but it only shows the root not the rest of the tree. Secondly, if the first answer is yes, then do I need to load the root separately from the rest of the nodes of the tree?
I have a jsFiddle loading the entire tree (root + 6 nodes) in one go, showing the problem: https://jsfiddle.net/vzqtocnh/1/
