Gradient background includes "total" for max gradient

In my tables, I'm seeing the 'total' row is always the max value in the column (obviously), and it's quite a bit larger than all the rest of the values in the column, which results in the gradient being compressed, and only the total is highlighted.

How can I disable the 'total' row entirely, or at perhaps, should the gradient ignore the total>
